What is ultrasound screening?

Ultrasound is a valuable technology that uses sound waves and radiographic imaging to visualize the internal structures of the body. Dr. Arena uses ultrasound to get a clearer picture of your breast tissue.

Ultrasound is especially helpful when trying to distinguish between the density of breast tissues, whether areas in question are made of solid material or filled with fluid. This test is safe, noninvasive, and doesn’t use radiation.

Ultrasound screening is one of several diagnostic tools that may help with early detection of breast cancer or other breast conditions. Ultrasound technology is also helpful in guiding the precise extraction of tissues or fluid during a biopsy. 

Why do I need an ultrasound screening?

Typically, Dr. Arena orders a breast ultrasound to help identify the underlying cause or nature of breast abnormalities found through a clinical exam or another screening.

She may order ultrasound screening when you have:

• Breast lumps
• Breast pain 
• Dense breast tissue
• Symptoms of a breast infection or abscess
• A history of fibrocystic breasts
• A higher-than-average risk for breast cancer
• Breast health concerns during pregnancy

Usually, breast ultrasound supplements other types of diagnostic studies and is most effective when combined with a breast MRI, mammogram, or biopsy.

What does an ultrasound screening entail?

Dr. Arena offers an in-office ultrasound, which allows for easier scheduling and less wait time when you are anxious for results. There is no preparation necessary for your ultrasound appointment.

During the ultrasound screening, Dr. Arena takes images of your breast tissues and then takes time to explain the results with you. She discusses any other treatments or plans of care indicated by the ultrasound.
